Hiawatha (c) 1550, was the founder of the Iroquois league and hero of the well-known poem by Longfellow. Legendary chief of the Onondaga of North America. He is credited with founding the Iroquois Confederacy. Hiawatha and Deganawida planned to stop war by establishing an alliance among the Mohawk, Onohdegas, Cayugas, and Senecas. The founding fathers reportedly used the league as a model of their concept democracy. Hiawatha said, "I don't want our grandchildren to be in war when they learn to use weapons." This made the Great Peace. Keeping peace is more important than war now. Hiawatha's name means "He Makes Rivers".
